Garry Cowan

Garry received his Certified General Accountant (CGA) designation in 1984.  Prior to that, he graduated from McMaster University in 1976 with a B.Sc. in mathematics.

He completed the Canadian Securities Course (Honours) in 1985 and obtained his Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation in 1997 which he used until his retirement in 2017.

Garry began working in Public Practice with McLaren & Co. in January 1981.  For over 20 years, Garry has been leading the Estates and Trusts practice at McLaren Trefanenko Inc. (previously McLaren & Co.).  He advises Executors, Committees, Estate Lawyers and the Public Guardian and Trustee of B.C. on all aspects of Estates and Trusts Taxation.

Garry was a member of the CGA Re-admission Committee from 1995 to 1999 and served as Director, and Chair of the Finance Committee of the Massey Theatre Society from 2000 to 2004.

He has been a member of the Fraser Valley Estate Planning Council since 1997.

To share some of his investment expertise, Garry has formed an investment club for MTI staff to improve financial literacy for professional development and personal gain.

In 2013, the Certified General Accountants (CGA), the Chartered Accountants (CA), and the Certified Management Accountants (CMA) of British Columbia, amalgamated to form one professional accounting designation in British Columbia, the Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA).  For more information please visit the CPA British Columbia website.
