After A Death Checklist

Recently my mother-in-law passed away, and my father-in-law asked that I assist with some of the paperwork required.  In searching for what is necessary to transfer the title of a car, I came across a checklist provided by the Province of BC.  The list helps you determine whom to notify and when.

Each section suggests when to do the step and why.  For example, under the section of Registering the Death, the checklist provides phone numbers for Vital Statistics 1-888-876-1633 and Service BC 1-800-663-7867, along with the recommendation that this step be done soon and to do this step to reduce fraud risk.

Other sections of the checklist include:

  • Cancel a Canadian Passport
  • Cancel a Citizenship Certificate or Permanent Residence Card
  • Transfer Vehicle Ownership
  • Insurance Companies
  • Banks and Credit Unions
  • Credit Cards
  • Utilities

You can find the complete checklist by clicking this link.

Whether you use an accountant or lawyer to assist with the administration of an estate or decide to do the work yourself, this checklist will assist you in gathering the necessary documents.
